Life was difficult for them. The milk seller
and twelve-year-old Nello got up every morning
before daylight. They loaded their small cart with
milk bought from a farmer. Then they would take
their milk into town by following the small road in
front of their small house.
The milk seller and his grandson often went
for days with no food. Their little hut was very
old. It had a broken door and a broken window. It
was very hot in the summer and very cold in the
winter.
Things were hard for these two, but they were
happy. One of the things that made them happy
was their dog. They loved their dog, Patrasche,
and he loved them, too.
