Introduction
The Barber of Seville
was written in the
1770s. It is the first of a group of three plays. All
three plays have the characters Figaro and Count
Almaviva in them. Together, the three plays are
often called “the Figaro plays.”
Even though the play is set in Spain, it was
written by a Frenchman. And it is a very funny
play. Gioachino Rossini put this play to music to
create one of his most famous operas.
